Vase sponges are named after their shape. Their outer surface provides an intricate system of meandering grooves or rounded tips. The inner walls are smooth and are somewhat ridged lengthwise, with scattered oscules. They are very spongy in consistency. Vase sponges are part of the Class Calcera. They have no muscle system.
